An overview of state-sponsored local government investment pools and an engaging discussion of current issues, trends, and opportunities. That is the content of a webinar organized by the National Association of State Treasurers earlier this week.

The webinar was moderated by the Hon. Mike Pellicciotti, Washington State Treasurer. I participated along with Stuart Williams, Director of Cash Management and Investments for the Commonwealth of Virginia and Marissa Zuccaro, of S&P Global.

Preliminary results of the PFII Survey of LGIPs

I reviewed preliminary results of the new PFII survey of State-Sponsored LGIPs. Assets totaled nearly $700 billion at the end of 2024, up modestly from the prior year.

S&P Data on Rated Pools

  S&P collects comprehensive data on pools that it rates. These represent about 65% of the assets of state and local-sponsored LGIPs.

Trends and Opportunities

 The mainstay of the webinar was a discussion of trends and opportunities.  We covered:

*   Emerging investment considerations

*      Advantages over money market funds

*      Technology challenges

*      Central clearing mandate

*      MSRB concept release on modernizing disclosure obligations for Municipal Fund Securities.
